Welcome to the IE Port of Sun Labs Lively Kernel!

This is a project supported by Sun Labs and has been implemented in collaboration with the Lively Kernel work at Sun Labs.

This version is intended for Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. The version is totally experimental (more experimental than the original Lively Kernel) and not intended for regular users. In order to be able to use Lively Kernel with Internet Explorer, the Renesis Player plugin by Examotion Ltd. has to be installed to add SVG support. The plugin can be downloaded at http://www.examotion.com/index.php?id=product_player_download.

BUGS AND ISSUES

• There still remain a lot of various major and minor issues which may lead to random crashes or other kinds of problems. Some non-functional widgets and elements have been deactivated in this demo, but even other ones suffer from various problems listed in the following. Obviously the same bugs are also encountered in the interactive tutorial.
• Currently the LK loads correctly in IE only if the page is reloaded twice or more (unfortunately, no recurring pattern in the number of needed reloads has been found). At the same time Please be patient and try again if the page does not load correctly. :-) IE may also suffer from occasional crashes while starting Lively Kernel.
• Problems with the keyboard handling should be solved. The text input widgets read a keypress as double and backspace and arrow keys do not work.
• The functionality mapped to Alt key should be replaced by another key when using IE, because Renesis player has reserved Alt for its own purposes. Due to this a number of LK functions are unusable at the moment, like the menu.
• Performance with IE is very low in comparison to FF and Safari.
• Problems with the word wrap of the tooltip texts.
• Issues with the XML file handling in IE.

Please note that porting of Lively Kernel to Internet Explorer is still work in progress, and the use of LK in IE may result in random crashes and loss of data. We are thankful for all kind of efforts that contribute to the port. The source code is available within the branches section of the Subversion repository of Sun Microsystems.
